Yes. Once armed, PhoneScream runs in the background and detects drops even when your phone is locked or you're using another app.
Try adjusting the sensitivity in Settings. The "High" preset is more sensitive and will catch lighter drops. Make sure the app is armed (green indicator) and that you've granted notification permissions.
